Lyssna i ny flikAll aboard the Trans-European Indie Express! This show was created as Europe went into its second covid lockdown in the fall of 2020, leaving small, local bands without gigs and festivals - and leaving us without the possibility to travel. Therefore, we will attempt to travel through Europe as digital music tourists, exploring different countries by tuning in to their local, independent music scene and discover artists that are largely unknown outside of their home countries.

This autumn the Trans-European Indie Express has left the station again! We're driving through Barcelona and Madrid, exploring the Spanish music scene. This episode will show you that Spain has much more to offer than catchy summer beats. Many of the young artists you will hear started their music career in lockdown with social media as the only reference to their success. From personal lyrics recorded in the intimate and sheltered space of their bedroom to a full stage for the first time. We will discuss the changes and challenges they are facing. Make yourself some tasty tapas and discover Spanish bedroom pop with us!

Out of service: The Trans-European Indie Express stops operating! After travelling through 15 countries throughout Europe, the interrailing experience is over – well, almost over. For the last episode, the three hosts of the Trans-European Indie Express, Iris, Siri and Anna are taking a trip down memory lane. We will present our highlights and most beloved artists of this trip. Are there any lessons learned? Definitely! Even if the Trans-European Indie Express is not operating anymore, we will not stop investigating the musical landscape of different countries and keep digging for the weirdest genres out there. All of our favourite songs of this journey are featured in our curated playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/68Yom1NVVzvzpEmS7QudCG?si=5fa7942abcf04a66

The Trans-European Indie Express comes to a halt in its home country, Sweden! After a very interesting interrailing experience through the alternative landscape of European music, it’s time to dig into the depths of the Swedish music scene. Siri, the native Swede, and Anna, the German, look back at the influences that shaped the modern Swedish alternative sound. And what would Sweden be without their famous pop music? Obviously, the bull in the china shop has to be discussed but no worries, the train is not stopping at this genre for too long and will also take you through some poetry excursions. We also talk to WIES about choosing to sing in Dutch within a very English influenced scene. All aboard the Trans-European Indie Express! Spark your wanderlust and get ready to test your geography skills as we steer clear of the techno mecca Berlin and opt for a wild ride through the alternative music from Germany's lesser-known cities! In this episode, Siri gets to tour Germany for the sixth (!) time as Anna and our special guest Yvonne talk about political activism in the German music scene and give us an insight on some oddly specific but beatific German vocabulary like Marmeladenglasmoment. In an interview with Anna, the indie rock band Cinema Nova reveals the story behind their song 'Anïs'! All aboard the Trans-European Indie Express! For this week's music interrailing experiment, regular host Iris sits back and leaves the steering and wheeling to our Croatian special guests Petar and Lana, who will take us through a wild ride across Croatia's dynamic musical landscape! Together we discuss the hodgepodge of languages that boiled down to the linguistic joy ride that is Croatian and the role of Serbian music. To summon the spirits of Spring to a particularly windy Gothenburg, we also sneak in a bit of reggae. All aboard the Trans-European Indie Express – this week’s stop is the United Kingdom! The self-isolating Brexit island has much more to offer than the Arctic Monkeys, Oasis and Two Door Cinema Club – and we will guide you through the well-kept secrets of the British alternative scene. For this week's journey, we are joined by the documentary filmmaker Brodie Rake, who will talk about the crisis of declining music venues in London. All aboard the Trans-European Indie Express! For the seventh stop in our online interrailing experiment, we make our way through the snowy mountains and cross the heart of Europe, Slovakia. Joined by Design student Dana, we dive into the meaning of Slovakian lyrics and the reason for its big Czech fanbase. We recommend to have a look at their music video’s; with backgrounds in arts, design and architecture, this episode’s artists put an important focus on the visual aspects of music. All aboard the Trans-European Indie Express! For the sixth stop in our online inter-railing experiment, we leap across the Baltic Sea to neighbouring Finland. With most artists choosing to sing in Finnish rather than English, and live in small towns rather than the capital, Finland’s independent sound has remained defiantly local in the global music industry. Join us as we explore the symbolic importance of the Finnish language and delve into hyper indie-pop, gritty rock, and everything in between. In a desperate attempt to escape the gloomy Swedish winter, this train is heading straight to Portugal! By blending modern indie rock with influences from traditional Portuguese fado and African music genres like kudoro, Portugal is currently home to some of the most experimental sounds in Europe. We explain why so many scholars are writing about the rise of Lisbon’s alternative music scene in the 1980s and explore its modern legacy. All aboard the Trans-European Indie Express! The fourth stop and the first one in the new year of 2021 is Latvia. While the country is well-known for its enchanted forests, long beaches and old, medieval towns, Latvian musicians are rather undiscovered yet. With influences from neighbouring country Russia but also lots of western music, Latvian indie music has found its own unique sound. All aboard the Trans-European Indie Express! Our third stop is Greece, commonly referred to (by over-enthusiastic high school teachers trying to breathe life into a class of bored, pre-pubescent students) as the cradle of Western civilization. Being the birthplace of Western philosophy, literature, drama and the Olympic Games, it is a country whose cultural export has entertained us for centuries. But when it comes to the international indie scene, Greek artists are still fairly unknown outside of their country. To find out what the sirens are singing these days, we invited a Greek local, journalist and fellow coursemate Konstantina Maltepioti, to virtually guide us through the Greek indie scene. All aboard the Trans-European Indie Express! The second stop on our great music interrailing adventure is France, a country that can pride itself on having birthed some of the strongest names in the global music industry over the past decades. But this is not a show for them, but for the small, local powerhouses of indie music that push the scene forward. Instead of blasting M83 and La Femme, we shy away from the spotlight and flip every cobblestone, cigarette and baguette in search of that special je ne sais quoi kind of sound. In the carriage with us is French jazz enthusiast Nessim Kleiche from the K103 show Jazz Your Mind Up and Yann Le Razavet from the French guitar-pop band Marble Arch.
